The Answers
  1. I am new to GPW - what are you trying to do with it?
    • GasPriceWatch.com was created in April of 1999 with the goal of saving the average consumer money. The idea was simple; give the consumers the information required to help them make cost-saving decisions.
    • Sometimes even the same fuel company will charge different prices in different parts of town to remain a low-cost leader in that neighborhood.
    • GasPriceWatch.com has no affiliation with any of the fuel vendors or other advocacy groups listed in this site.
    • Our mission is to become a voice for the consumer and we plan to continue to improve our value to you, the consumer.
    • By providing the consumers the ability to search their local gas stations for the lowest prices, their hard-earned dollars can be spent more wisely.

  2. What are those national prices on the top of the page for?
The purpose of this information is in order for you to gauge or see where your local prices for regular gas fit within the scope of the USA and to reveal the average of the prices.

    Jump back to the Questions
  3. What is meant by "The Gas Gap?"
The Gas Gap refers to the difference between the highest and the lowest prices for regular gas in the USA. The same fuel company will charge different prices in different parts the country or town.
    Jump back to the Questions
  4. Where are the prices?
With 120,000+ stations it is impossible for us to verify all of the prices that are on the site.
    • If you see no prices listed for a station that you are searching for... this means that while the station may indeed exist, there simply has not been a recent update of the prices.
It would be very much appreciated by your fellow drivers if you would submit updated prices (see "How do I sign up to be a spotter?")
    • Some of our prices are updated from an electronic source, although these prices are typically correct they can be inaccurate on occasion.
    • If you are unsure about a price or if the price seems "too good to be true" be sure to call the station ahead of time. (Phone numbers if available are listed under "Station Info" on the price results pages.
    • If you notice a spotter that is consistently entering inaccurate data, please notify us so we may take action.
    • If there is a station in your area that consistently has wrong prices, we urge you to become a spotter and help keep those prices correct!

    Jump back to the Questions
  5. What about the 9/10 in the price?
To round or not to round? The answer: Do NOT Round up the price.
It is assumed that all prices have (an additional) 9/10 on the end.
If the price on the big sign (and on the pump) is 2.66 9/10 or 2.669, then please enter only 2.66
Likewise, if you see 2.73 on our site, that means the price is 2.73 and nine tenths

    Jump back to the Questions
  6. How do I search for prices?
There are several ways to find prices:
Select a method of search:  Zip Code Search
    Intersection Search
    Advanced Search
    Lat/Long Search
Fill in some info on the left side of the page, and press the Submit button. It's as easy as that.
The fields marked * are required.
In the Advanced search, no fields are marked like that, but you must fill in at least one field.
    Jump back to the Questions
  7. The prices are old on the first page. How do I see the current prices?
By default the prices are listed on the results pages from low to high. (Prices listed are dependent upon timely postings by the spotters... to have the most current postings become a spotter and help keep the listings up-to-date.)
    • You can resort the listings by; Station Name, Street Address, Fuel Grade, or other options
    • You can also choose to Show ALL Results or ONLY prices newer than 4, 8, 12, 24 or 48 hours.

    Jump back to the Questions
  8. Are the prices listed guaranteed?
Sorry but because we rely upon volunteer spotters to supply the pricing and due to the fact that it can be several hours between the time the price was "spotted" and time it is put into the database. There is no guarantee of pricing. If we were to receive prices directly from the stations... the prices even then would only be able to be accurate at the time they were posted. By the time you drive into the station to fill-up... prices could change again.
    Jump back to the Questions
  9. When I see a "spotter" name by a station does that mean that only that spotter can update the prices at that station?
Certainly not... when you see the spotter name it means that particular spotter was the last one to enter data (at least one price) for that station. Once you become a spotter your name will appear for any station that you post updated price for.
    Jump back to the Questions
  10. Why do I want to become a spotter?
    • Help yourself; friends and family enjoy the benefits of saving money.
    • Have fun "challenging" others to see who can find the lowest price in a given day.
    • Compare your efforts to others across country.
    • Spotters are rewarded by point accumulation. (Just for signing up to be a spotter, you will earn 100 points.)
    • Every time you update a fuel price with an accurate price, you will earn 10 points.
    • Each time you add a station or supplier, you will earn 50 points once the information is accepted.
    • For each inaccurate or false price you enter, your account will be deducted 20 points.
    • Points are used to track our Top Spotters.

Currently the system is just for bragging rights; however, we are looking to develop another program with a corporate sponsor in the near future.

  11. What do you consider regular, plus and premium gas?
In most of the U.S., regular gas has an octane rating of 87,
midgrade gas is 89, and premium is 91 or 92. (Octane ratings
are lower in the mountain west due to the effects of thin air
on internal combustion.) Contrary to widespread belief, the
    octane rating doesn't indicate how much power the fuel delivers;
all grades of gasoline contain roughly the same amount of heat
energy. Rather, a higher octane rating means the fuel is less
likely to cause your engine to knock or ping.
The majority of cars are designed to run on regular gas, and
that's what the manuals tell the owners to use. If your car
needs high-octane gas, the manual will say so.
Using high-octane gas in a car designed for regular accomplishes
little except more rapid combustion of your money.

  12. Is it auto diesel or truck diesel you are pricing?
As our focus is the average driver, the diesel prices you see listed are for auto diesel. (As the site and participation grow we hope to be able to also list truck diesel pricing.)

    or by clicking here.
Put your information in about the station.
The more information you include, the faster we can confirm the location and add it to our live data.
Correct address and cross-street are VERY important.
Include your login name and password at the bottom.
    Click on "Submit"
    Jump back to the Questions
  22. If I add a station: when should I see it appear as a selection?
That would depend upon the accuracy and completeness of the information supplied. We need the correct address and zip code in order for the station to be geo-coded (mapped). Phone numbers and cross-streets (nearest intersection) help to establish additional search criteria. If all items are correct and no additional detective work is needed a new station could appear in rather short order... if not it could take several days.
    Jump back to the Questions
  23. Do I need to know the "brand" of gas or the name of the station or its owner (affiliate) offered at a station, when searching for a price or posting a new station?
When searching, no. You can specify that in the advanced search, or you can leave it empty.
When adding a new station, we do want to know that information, so people will be able to search for it, if they want to.
    Jump back to the Questions
  24. What do I do if I post an incorrect price?
You can either re-enter the correct price immediately (you will not receive any additional points for these prices)

  31. I am planning a driving trip; is there a way that I can determine my route and get a listing of stations "along the way?"
At this time we do not offer this particular feature... you will need to use a map of your trip and plot markers or stations along the way yourself. Once plotted you can than use our site to find pricing.
You can do this fairly easily though by using either the Intersection Search or Advanced Search options and inputing the cross-streets along your route. Then place these stations within you "My Page" and sort by priority...
Or on any Results page you can use the You Can Sort Your Results By: drop down menu to sort by direction (East to West, etc).
